HeroQuest Tokens: Doors, Walls, Traps
Diving back into the world of HeroQuest has been a nostalgic journey, but I quickly realized that the original game components could use some visual upgrades.
After revisiting HeroQuest after many years, I quickly found the original cardboard tokens disappointingly flat and visually uninteresting. The walls, doors, and traps that define the dungeon layout deserved better than thin cardboard cutouts that constantly shifted during gameplay. I decided to create 3D replacements using primarily 3mm MDF for the walls and door frames, which provided the perfect thickness and stability while remaining low enough not to obscure the board. The walls received carved stone textures and weathered paint treatments, while doors gained actual wooden panels with metal hinges and handles. The transformation was immediate and dramatic—our gaming sessions now feature a dungeon that actually looks like a dungeon, with clearly defined pathways, obvious dangers, and immersive details. Most importantly, the game board has become significantly easier to read at a glance, with open doorways, deadly traps, and impassable walls all instantly recognizable, allowing players to focus on strategy rather than squinting at cardboard markers.
